Overcoming the fear of being alone

The famous author and philosopher, Elsa Punset, believes that “being alone now can be considered an epidemic in the 21st century.” Have we really gotten to the point that we have turned the fear of being alone into a serious and overly widespread disorder?

So the question is:  is there a solution? Is the fear of being alone a serious problem? We must not forget that being alone, according to clinical studies, also affects human health. 

Being alone, or more specifically the feeling of being alone accompanied by a feeling of abandonment, weakens the immune system. It also causes our blood pressure to rise. This then affects an increase in the number of the hormones that are associated with stress. The physical consequences of being alone can include obesity, drug addiction and difficulty sleeping. 

Can one really stop being afraid of being alone? Is there a cure for loneliness? Is it better to be in a bad relationship than not to have one at all? Is it normal to feel abandoned even when you are in a relationship?

To be alone in our modern world

According to the philosopher Elsa Punset, there are certain factors in our modern world that make people constantly feel that they lack connection to their surroundings. This is despite the fact that they are surrounded by other people.

The average number of close, intimate friends each person has has dropped in the last few years. It has gone down from three to one or none. This is despite the many social networks and the huge number of “friends” or contacts that one might have on Facebook or Twitter.

A close friend is someone with whom you can share your secrets, fears and worries. The lack of this person, especially in people over 30, has a big impact.

Can one overcome the fear of being alone?

Now a question arises. Can one easily overcome the fear of being alone? Of course you can. But it is not an easy process and it requires a lot of effort. Sometimes you may need professional help. Especially if one feels chronic loneliness.

Here are some tips to get you started on overcoming the fear of being alone.

  • Consider yourself the most important person in your life. You come first. Therefore, you need to trust your own potential. Believe in your decisions. This strategy will help you fight the fear of loneliness when it sneaks into your life.
  • Be rational. The fear of being alone can be turned into something irrational. Find out what is hiding behind your fears. Look for a logical explanation that your mind can accept and understand. You will probably realize that this is something you can handle well.
  • Forget the past.  Another good strategy is forgiveness. Staying in a place full of hatred, bitterness and bad memories of being abandoned will only bring you pain. You will need to move forward with optimism and good health. 
  • Many people associate happiness with being in a relationship. This is a mistake. Having a partner or being with other people is not synonymous with joy. There are some people who are lone wolves despite being surrounded by people. One has to understand that being alone is something positive. It is never worse than an empty and indifferent relationship.
  • You need to know that you are special. We are all amazing because the mind is an amazing thing. Appreciate yourself and be aware of how valuable you are. Completely without the need for the company of others.  This is an indispensable step in overcoming the fear of having alone time.

Being afraid of being alone is truly an irrational fear. Good self-confidence, personal satisfaction, good self-esteem and confidence in one’s own abilities are important factors in overcoming all kinds of problems. Therefore, it is in our hands as individuals to overcome the modern epidemic, which is the fear of being alone.
