The Curious Puppy: A Beautiful Story of Reflection

This story of reflection is about the curious puppy. It begins in a wooded area far away. Deep in the woods lay an abandoned house. A house that was uninhabited for many years. The puppy had seen the house well, but was afraid to approach it. He stayed away from it for fear of finding something he did not like.

The puppy was curious anyway. The next day he returned and approached the house a little more, but did not dare go inside. The sun began to look up and the temperature became unbearable. The puppy had to seek shelter from the heat of the sun.

After some deliberation, he decided to go inside. The house was completely abandoned. “Hello!” said the dog, but no one answered. In one of the corners there was a staircase and he was walking towards it. There did not appear to be a soul in the house, so he walked carefully up the stairs. Here, this story of reflection with the curious puppy takes a surprising turn…

An unexpected encounter in this story of reflection

When the puppy reached the end of the stairs, he met a large living room. To his surprise, he found hundreds of puppies just like him! And they all seemed to be waiting for him.

A dog gives paw

The curious puppy was overjoyed. The other dogs looked really friendly. They gave him the confidence to raise his little paw and greet them. Everyone greeted back immediately. The little dog barked kindly and the others did the same. “What a lovely place!” thought the little dog. “I will return here as soon as I can!”

The days passed and  another dog arrived. This dog was different; he was much more scared and prepared. He went through the same process as the first. When he saw the house, he would not approach it. He was too scared so he stayed away.

Same place, second meeting

The other dog saw that there were many lovely places in the area. He decided to go back, but he always kept his distance from the house. One day it was pouring rain so he had no choice; he had to go into the house.

A dog in the rain

Like the first dog, he dug a hole into the house. When he reached in, he looked around carefully. He spotted the stairs at the other end, but did not dare approach. Time passed and he began to freeze. He thought that if he went up on the second floor, it would be a little warmer,  so he gathered courage and went up the stairs.

The dog came all the way up and saw the same, large living room. He sniffed around and it did not look like there was anyone. But then he also found hundreds of dogs like him. He immediately got ready to attack and the other dogs did just like him. He barked aggressively, and the others the same. The dog left the house as fast as he could, while telling himself he would never return. “What a horrible place!” he thought.

He disappeared so quickly that he did not see an old sign on the floor. The sign said “The Mirror House”. Neither the first nor the second dog had realized that they had seen a reflection of themselves.

The moral of the story: Reflection

This story of reflection with the curious puppy shows us a truth we often overlook. What we see in others is basically a reflection of ourselves. We get from others what we ourselves give. Those who receive the world kindly receive kindness. Those who accept the world in an aggressive way get aggression. History tries to teach us the importance of reflection.

Humans genetically have a great social ability. We are born to live in groups; it is part of our biology and culture. We may be selfish, but the group exists in all of us.

The rest of the group is an essential starting point to take; they function as the “Mirror House”. What we see in them has a lot to do with what we see in ourselves – just like in the story of the curious puppy.

When faced with challenges, we should question ourselves and not the world. Is the world the problem? Maybe it’s ourselves who do not relate very positively to it? The story of the curious puppy makes us think about whether it’s time for some positive reflection.
